Some aspects of the Bible and Christian life instigate a lot of questions from friends and family seeking God. This includes how to live out our faith in accordance with the grace Jesus has given to us, following the law, and finding a way to incorporate both. I was reading Psalm 119 and verses 142-144 stuck out to me. They say:
“Your righteousness is righteous forever, and your law is true. Trouble and anguish have found me out, but your commandments are my delight. Your testimonies are righteous forever; give me understanding that I may live.”
Because we are saved through the blood and love of Jesus Christ, we have grace that covers our lives. We are no longer bounded by the law; instead, this grace allows us to thrive under the law. We aren’t following God’s principles because we HAVE to, but because we WANT to, and because we know our Heavenly Father has our best interests in mind. I can trust the Word of God. It is all-sufficient, because it reflects the nature of God. God has never let me down, and His Word will not lead me astray. God’s law is both permanent and reliable, and when I find myself swimming in anxious thoughts and trying times, I can find His law to be a delight and a source of power to keep going; it revives and replenishes my supply of energy to serve Him and love others with all of my heart.
When I’m not acting in accordance with the law, I’m straying from His beautiful and perfect will for my life. I’m at my best, my happiest, and my kindest when I’m pursuing His loving and thought-out path for me. God has spoken something over all of us, what He has in store for us to be and accomplish on this earth. I want to choose every day to pick up that calling and run with it, knowing that as I use his laws as a guideline to pursue my calling, I am allowing Him to work through me in the best and most efficient way. My mind is clear, my thoughts are wise, things are in control — not in my own, but in God’s control.
The law isn’t scary or something to run from, it’s a helpful tool for us to measure our life by. God knew what He was doing when He put His commandments into place, acting as a loving Father and not as an all-powerful, all-controlling ruler. The Word of God trains and equips us, granting us wisdom to tackle everyday life. Through the scriptures, we learn of God’s true character and the purpose we have during our time on earth. When our delight is in the Lord, our delight is in his law, and we can enthusiastically meditate on it day and night.
Spend some time meditating on Psalm 119 today. Find versus that stick out to you and give you insight into the ways God works, His nature, and how you fit into the whole picture. Allow God to use His Word to speak into your life, convict you if necessary, solidify or mend the way you view His law, and show you how the law and the grace given to us through Jesus Christ’s sacrifice on the cross work together to create a satisfying and fulfilling earthly life that gives us glimpses of life in Heaven, eternal paradise.
